Eye & Vision Exams from Our Silicon Beach Optometrist
You only get one pair of eyes, and you want to take the best possible care of them — so don’t wait until you experience vision problems to schedule an eye exam or vision exam. Many serious diseases and disorders can cause slow, progressive damage to the structures of the eye without your being aware of it; even a simple refractive error responsible for nearsightedness or farsightedness can impair your vision more than you realize. That’s why our Silicon Beach optometrist, Dr. Jenn Tabiza, provides eye and vision exams for Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Ray, Playa Vista and Los Angeles residents.
What To Expect At Westchester Eyecare Center
Eye health testing is one of the most critical aspects of any eye evaluation. Our optometrist strongly recommends that all patients schedule a regular eye exam so we can catch any threats to their eyesight as early as possible, especially since diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration cause irreversible vision loss. We dilate the pupils to see as much the retina as possible; this allows us to diagnose issues such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or optic nerve damage from glaucoma. (We take photos of the retina for an ongoing record of any changes that may be occurring.)
Our optometrist measures the pressure of the fluid inside the eyes, since excessive intraocular pressure is a risk factor for glaucoma. Examining the front of the eye under a strong light can reveal the presence of cataracts, as well as corneal irritation due to an infection or dry eyes. We can measure tear production and tear film to determine whether you have dry eyes that need to be treated.
Eye function testing is another part of our comprehensive eye exam. We will evaluate your color vision, binocular vision (which is critical for depth perception), focusing power, eye teaming and eye alignment. While these tests are important for everyone, they’re especially crucial for children whose eye/brain coordination is still developing.
The vision exam helps us determine whether you’re suffering from a refractive error. Refractive errors such as astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness prevent images from coming into sharp focus at the back of the eye. Older eyes may also suffer from presbyopia, which limits the lens’s ability to focus on close-up objects. Refractive testing with the aid of an eye chart can show our optometrist whether you need a prescription for corrective lenses such as glasses or contacts. (If you do need glasses, you can get them right here; we have a wide range of designer frames to choose from.) Cataracts can usually be compensated for with glasses until they become too severe, at which point we can refer you for cataract removal surgery.
