Early Detection and Prevention of Visual Impairment and Near Blindness through Regular Checkups
One of the best reasons for a semi-annual checkup at your optometrist is that many types of severe vision loss problems and near blindness can often be prevented through early detection of diseases like Macular Degeneration. Our optometrists in Los Angeles, CA at Westchester Eye Care Center are available at a number of locations to ensure that you have easy access to regular checkups.
Macular Degeneration and Blindness
It’s true that Macular Degeneration rarely causes total blindness but its effects can be for all practical purposes just as devastating. Though it can occur at any age, this condition is most often found among people over 60.
What is Macular Degeneration?
This condition occurs when the central portion of a person’s retina and its light-sensing nerve tissues (macular) deteriorate. Because this is often a natural occurrence as a person ages it is often referred to as AMD or Age-related Macular Degeneration. AMD seldom causes total blindness but it can cause significant visual disability.
How is Macular Degeneration Diagnosed?
Westchester Eye Care Center and our optometrist in can detect AMD during a routine eye exam. Your doctors will often ask you to look at a pattern of straight lines that resemble a checkerboard called an Amsler grid to detect if straight lines in the grid appear wavy. If so, that is a sign of AMD.
Should your exam reveal AMD, you may also be given a procedure called an angiography or an OCT. With an angiography, the dye is injected into a vein. An OCT requires no dye.
If new vessels occur or existing ones leak fluid into the macula, the photographs identify the exact location where degeneration is present.
Can AMD be Treated?
Early detection of both macular degeneration and AMD is essential because your optometrist can prescribe treatments that can either reduce the severity of the disease or delay its onset.
