Visit Your Westchester Optometrist Age-Related Macular Degeneration Month
Each February, Prevent Blindness America sponsors Age-Related Macular Degeneration Month to raise awareness about a condition that adversely affects the vision millions of Americans who are over the age of 50. For this reason, February is the ideal opportunity for you to schedule an appointment to see your optometrist for an eye exam. Regular vision exams are the best way to detect macular degeneration early and to provide treatment before it causes serious damage to your eyesight.
If you live in Los Angeles or are in the vicinity of Westchester, the Westchester Eyecare Center is your best option for outstanding eye care services.
What Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration and What Causes It?
The eye’s retina is where one’s color vision and central vision originate. Age-related macular degeneration pertains to the macula, which is a part of the retina and is one of the leading causes of vision loss in Americans who are over the age of 50.
Individuals with Age-Related Macular Degeneration have degenerative proteins called “drusen” deposited under their retinas. These deposits can be detected early and treated to eliminate or minimize damage to the eyes. However, if left too long, the retina’s structural support system breaks down, which can enable abnormal blood vessels to leak fluid, grow, and disrupt the cells of the retina.
In cases where these blood vessels are allowed to continue to grow inside the macula, the central vision can be severely damaged or lost. Since there are additional varieties of macular degeneration that do not entail drusen deposits, it is still important to schedule complete eye exams with your optometrist regularly.
