Our Optometrist in Westchester Can Help You Cope with Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear intraocular lens. The transparent lens of the eye actually contains individual proteins that are held in suspension to maintain the lens's transparency. When the proteins start to gather together into a solid mass that blocks incoming light, you've got a cataract -- but don't panic. Our optometrist in Westchester can help you safeguard your eyesight against this common condition.

Cataract Types, Symptoms and Complications

Cataracts can take multiple forms and appear for numerous reasons. Examples include:

  • Nuclear sclerotic cataracts - These cataracts, which form very slowly in the center of the lens, are the most common age-related variety.
  • Cortical cataracts- These cataracts begin at the outer rim of the lens and work their way inward in a spoke-like formation. They're most commonly seen in diabetics.
  • Posterior subcapsular cataracts - These cataracts develop toward the back of the lens, sometimes rapidly. They are associated with steroid use, diabetes, and certain retinal conditions.

Other risk factors for cataracts include eye injuries, smoking, heavy alcohol use, excessive exposure to UV radiation and family history.

If you have nuclear sclerotic cataracts, you may not even notice any vision changes at first. Over time, however, you may notice that your night vision has deteriorated and/or your color perception has changed. Your eyes may become more sensitive to glare, and you may see strange halo-like patterns around lights. Your vision may also become progressively more blurred, interfering with reading, driving and other activities. Advanced cataracts can even cause blindness.

Cataract Treatment Options

The good news is that while cataracts remain a leading cause of blindness worldwide, in many ways they are easier to treat and compensate for than other serious vision problems. Early diagnosis is extremely helpful for identifying the nature of any vision symptoms you may be experiencing. Our optometrist in Westchester, Dr. Jenn Tabiza, can see the telltale signs of cataract formation through slit lamp testing and other techniques during your comprehensive eye exam. Even if you're not yet suffering from vision problems, this early detection can put us on the alert so we can recommend UV-blocking sunglasses and lifestyle changes that may slow cataract development.

Early-stage cataract treatment focuses on compensating for vision issues. We can alter your corrective lens prescription to compensate for the blurriness caused by your cataracts, while special lens filters and coatings can reduce irritating glare. Eventually, we may refer you to an eye surgeon for a fast, easy outpatient procedure to replace your cataract-damaged lenses with clear artificial lenses. Our Westchester eye doctor can prepare you for this procedure and administer the necessary follow-up exams to help you enjoy a good result.

Testimonial

"Dr. T is very thorough with her eye exams. She asks all the right questions with what you need. She takes her time with her patients making sure they get what they need and get to know them. She's very professional but also approachable. You can ask her any eye related issues and she'll have answers for you. If she doesn't have an answer, which doesn't happen often, she'll get the right information for you. She also doesn't try to up sell you with what you don't need. I would recommend her to all my family and friends. In fact I've already done so and they're all very satisfied with the service."
