What Are Cataracts?

A cataract happens when the lens inside your eye goes from clear to cloudy, thus causing blurry vision. Our optometrist in Westchester can diagnose cataracts on an eye exam, prescribe vision correction eyewear to accommodate vision loss, and help you determine when and if surgical removal of the affected lens is appropriate (which is one of the standard treatments).

What is Cataract Surgery?

When a cataract gets big enough, many people opt to have the cataract removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant (IOL). This is a generally simple outpatient procedure. You'll likely be given an eye shield to wear at least for a few hours after your surgery. Your surgeon may ask you to wear this shield at night for a few days to ensure your cataracts heal. When you first remove this eye shield, your vision may be a little blurry and you may notice some visual distortion. This is normal as your eyes adjust to the new implant, and should go away within a couple hours.

What is the Typical Cataract Surgery Recovery Time?

With no complications, your cataract surgery should take only around 10 to 15 minutes, with a recovery time in-office of around 30 to 60 minutes as your sedation wears off. Some redness and irritation are also normal in the first day or two post-op, but if you experience any signs or symptoms of infection or if your symptoms last longer than a few days, we recommend calling your surgeon.

What Can I Do to Help My Recovery?

In addition to wearing the eye shield as instructed, we recommend scheduling a post-op appointment with our doctor of optometry. Dr. Tabiza can closely monitor and assess your eyes to ensure recovery is going smoothly, and provide supportive treatments such as medications to control inflammation. Later on in your recovery, our optometrist can also perform a thorough eye exam to ensure your vision correction needs are up-to-date.

Testimonial

"Dr. T is very thorough with her eye exams. She asks all the right questions with what you need. She takes her time with her patients making sure they get what they need and get to know them. She's very professional but also approachable. You can ask her any eye related issues and she'll have answers for you. If she doesn't have an answer, which doesn't happen often, she'll get the right information for you. She also doesn't try to up sell you with what you don't need. I would recommend her to all my family and friends. In fact I've already done so and they're all very satisfied with the service."
