Optometrist in Silicon Beach Recommends Eye Exams for All Ages

According to the American Optometric Association, infants should have their first eye exam at six months. Toddlers should have a comprehensive eye examination by three years, and children should be tested before beginning school. Children should then have an eye examination every two years. If glasses are prescribed, children should be re-examined annually. Our optometrist in Silicon Beach encourages parents to adhere to this recommended schedule; proper eye development and visual acuity are necessary for children to learn and develop skills, like motor coordination, necessary for them to participate in school. Early detection of eye conditions ensures prompt treatment and resolution.

What to Expect During a Children's Eye Exam With A Silicon Beach Optometrist

During a children's eye exam at Westchester Eyecare Center, our optometrists will first talk with you about your child's medical history. It is important to notify us of any health problems or symptoms your child has experienced or any medications he or she is taking. We will perform a comprehensive eye exam to test visual acuity (looking for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism), peripheral vision, eye movement, binocular vision, ability focus, and hand-eye coordination. We will also dilate your child's eyes in order to visually examine the health and development of the eyes' internal structures.

During an infant's eye exam, our optometrist will inspect your baby's eyes, looking for any signs of early disease such as infantile glaucoma or tumor. We will also test your child's ocular movement, tracking ability, and eye alignment.

Screening for Conditions Like Nearsightedness, Farsightedness & Astigmatism

A comprehensive pediatric eye exam screens your child's vision, testing for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism which diminish visual acuity. During a children's eye exam, we also look for signs of the following conditions:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) is a condition in which a child's eyes develop differently, often resulting in total vision loss in one eye if left untreated. Treatment usually includes corrective lenses, eye patching, and vision therapy.

  • Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned. If left untreated, strabismus can cause amblyopia.

  • Some children have difficulty focusing on objects near or far away or maintaining focus when switching between the two. Treatments for this condition are similar to those for strabismus and amblyopia.

  • Convergence Insufficiency is a condition in which the eyes have a difficult time working together (using binocular vision).

  • Though commonly thought of as a disease associated with age, glaucoma is prevalent in patients of all ages and is often first detected in infancy.

Testimonial

"Dr. T is very thorough with her eye exams. She asks all the right questions with what you need. She takes her time with her patients making sure they get what they need and get to know them. She's very professional but also approachable. You can ask her any eye related issues and she'll have answers for you. If she doesn't have an answer, which doesn't happen often, she'll get the right information for you. She also doesn't try to up sell you with what you don't need. I would recommend her to all my family and friends. In fact I've already done so and they're all very satisfied with the service."
